The Housing and Planning Act 2016, defines self-build and custom housebuilding as
“…the building or completion by— (a) individuals, (b) associations of individuals, or (c) persons working with or for individuals or associations of individuals of houses to be occupied as homes by those individuals”
Self-build housing enables a flexibility and individuality in homes which is a refreshing change from uniformed housing estates across the country.
The Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act (2015) (as amended by the Housing and Planning Act 2016) outlined a requirement for all ‘relevant authorities’ to keep a self-build and custom-building register.
We are delighted to see that Shropshire Council have recently unveiled a ‘first-of-its kind’ self-build project for Shrewsbury. The plan for low density self-build, low-carbon, hybrid and unique development scheme. Shropshire are building on their successes at the Build it awards 2018- where they won Best Council for Self/Custom Builders. We praise their commitment to environmental and social objectives and urge housebuilders to implement these standards into everyday practice.
