#Planning – First day, first impressions: Learning to speak the language

“Hit the ground running” is a pertinent expression for my first day in a new role as a Trainee Planner with Ethical Partnership. After a brief induction session covering basic practicalities, the next item on the agenda was a meeting about advancing plans for an extension to a listed building. As someone who is new to the world of Planning, it felt in many ways like learning a whole new language. Differentiating between personal preference and fact (and communicating this clearly to clients) is going to be a crucial step. Learning the vocabulary and acronyms will be another vital requirement. Interpreting the wishes of clients, architects and Local Planning Authorties (and ensuring that the outcome is desirable to each party) seems akin to translating poetry from one language to another. Conforming to the National Planning Policy Framework could be compared to the grammar lessons. Reaching linguistic proficiency is going to be a steep learning curve.
