2021 Local Elections and the Planning System

Councils play a pivotal role in shaping our towns, cities and villages. Council’s set out their vision through development and local plans and essentially set a framework for the area and how it should be developed.

Political changes to a council, including losing or gaining overall control, can and very often do, have an impact on Council’s planning services. Often different councillors may prioritise different things, meaning that understanding the political make up of a Council is vitally important to the success of a development. Below is a breakdown of what the 2021 Local Elections have meant for the North East of England:

  • Conservatives win Hartlepool by-election.
  • Labour holds Sunderland, Newcastle, Gateshead and North and South Tyneside councils.
  • Conservatives take control of Northumberland County Council.
  • Labour loses control of Durham County Council.
  • Hartlepool Council remains under no overall control despite Conservative gains.

At Ethical Partnership North East Ltd we understand not only the role that local council politicians have within the planning system but how to engage them positively and collaboratively for the best outcome.
