Gateshead Council Launches Call for Sites

A Call for Sites has been launched by Gateshead Council, from 26 August to 23 October 2022. This provides an early opportunity for individuals, landowners and developers to suggest sites they own to be considered as housing sites, employment land or to fill another need.

If you own land in Gateshead, we can advise you on its potential suitability and guide you through the process of submitting your sites to the council.

The aim of the Call for Sites is to ensure that Gateshead Council has up-to-date evidence of the availability and potential development sites across the borough, which will be published in the council’s Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA).

As part of the Call for Sites exercise, Gateshead Council has advised that it will not consider taking land out of the Green Belt to accommodate housing or commercial uses as part of this Call for Sites. However, they will consider brownfield sites within the existing Green Belt to be put forward, with uses such as leisure being potentially considered appropriate for development.

Following the Call for Sites, all relevant sites will be assessed for their suitability and availability in accordance with Planning Practice Guidance. This assessment will consider any constraints that could prevent and limit development, and an assessment of achievability will consider whether development of the site could be economically viable.

If you own land within Gateshead and wish for it to be considered as part of the Call for Sites, contact us and we will work to help realise its potential. Whilst plans for the local area and for land use are still in the stages of development, it is important that you are supported throughout all consultations and stages.
